The Institute of Biology in Sarajevo was established on January 11, 1946, by a decision of the National Museum and the Office of the Presidency of the People's Government of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Establishment Decree No. 5962, dated January 12, 1946). This decree was published in the Official Gazette of Bosnia and Herzegovina on January 16, 1946 (Issue No. 3, Page 57).
Two years later, on January 1, 1948, the Institute of Biology became an independent institution under the management and supervision of the Committee for Faculties, Colleges, and Scientific Institutions.
That same year, the Institute launched the first issue of its journal, Annals of the Institute of Biology. The journal was published for over four decades until its closure, along with its publisher, in 1992. Today, all issues of the journal are available in digitized form on the Faculty of Science's website.
